My hard drive is making a high pitched buzz/screech. What’s happening? What do I do?

When I turn on my power bar, the buzzing begins (MOST of the time … sometimes, it actually doesn’t). I’ve been noticing this a few days ago, though this has never happened before.

When I turn on my actual computer, the screeching stops temporarily, but then goes back up again (sometimes even louder than before, but just by a bit). It is still buzzing right now – as it is a constant buzz.
I’ve done some “research” on Google and Yahoo! search but I really don’t know what to do. It could be my hard drive is “going”? I don’t know.
I AM NOT A COMPUTER EXPERT AT ALL. I DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT COMPUTERS AT ALL. Please help me – but use language that I can understand!
What is the cause of the buzzing? And what can I do to prevent it? And is there anything I should do before something is too late (i.e. if my hard drive will crash or lose everything? i don’t know if it will .. but i hope not!)?
